Yeah, good point. I really hated that scene because it got spoiled for me in the pre-show. But I think it was obvious they were just trying to set up some future angst between daddy and daughter. So when they have the waterfall scene, I'm not buying it for a second that he would risk his son by yelling out loud, assuming it is completely muffled. Even if he tested it himself several times, I just don't buy it.
I do like that they have a spot they can go talk safely though. Yay for safehouse room from Resident Evil. I got that sort of feeling when they were there.
Yeah, we shouldn't be trying to pick it apart cuz it's such a fun ride. But it's too hard to resist trying to solve those monsters I think.
Great posts everyone. I think Charlest and I are totally aligned on what we get out of movies like this.
edit: just to go back to that key scene in the beginning.
Warning: Spoiler!
it was still absolutely BRUTAL and I thought they filmed it perfectly. You are certainly not expecting it.
But then ONCE THAT HAPPENS, shouldn't the father become super paranoid later about every little detail since he would blame himself for the batteries and such?

Although I found it pretty dumb that he starts playing with this super loud thing (he must clearly have been warned about sound non-stop), in fact I was sure HE was the deaf one at the beginning, the rest of that scene plays out REALLY well and I found it very smartly-filmed. The slow realization of what has happened in the dad's face, as he turns, you see his wife's tear-drenched face already realizing what has happened, and then as Jim from the office sprints back, you see the face of his deaf daughter looking at her dad as she's piecing together what this means (since she can't hear what's behind her at all). And then as he sees the thing crashing through the forest to his right... omg. that whole sequence is really well done.
