They dubbed it "volume 6" in the same line as the Lion Voltron one, but I definitely saw it as Best Buy yesterday. $21, I'll probably have to pick that up.

Sorry, but this doesn't make sense.

1) A lot of people feel that singers like Frank Sinatra "interpreting" the material of a writer and claiming most or all of the credit is unfair, and that whatever his skills as a vocalist Sinatra (and others like him) is a lesser artist than many people who write and perform their own songs.

2) Writing a song is difficult. But I suspect designing a game is harder.

3) Whatever you believe about who ought to get the credit for Frank Sinatra's performances, it is indisputable that he had an enormous talent as a singer. To be a good singer is pretty rare - to be an outstanding one is incredibly so. Virtually any bozo can play a game, and being more skilled at playing a game does not equal being any better at "interpreting" it in the manner you describe.

You are off on a tangent Matt. The point is that most people could care less about the songwriter or game designer. Most real gamers don't concern themselves with design philosophy, they are too busy playing games.

Those gamers that do concern themselves with designers and design philosophy are putting themselves in league with elitists. It is in attempt by them to acheive a higher level of status in the hobby. But as I have said before there are no "levels" in this hobby. This hobby is about playing games pure and simple, not collecting, not game design, GAME PLAYING.

It is interesting to me that the designers are so prominately displayed on most Eurogames, perhaps this is the source of putting the designer on the pedestal.

If you are a Country music fan, you will most likely remember the Country artist of the year but not the songwriter of the year. Fair or not that is life, the artist takes the spotlight.

This is the reason there will never be a Designer of the Year, Platinum Pawn Award. I will leave that to Larry Levy and his 3 way ties.

Yes you can - why do you think 3rd edition had all of those skulls everywhere?

IMO the two aren't mutually exclusive.

Those gamers that do concern themselves with designers and design philosophy are putting themselves in league with elitists.

But doesn't this include many prominent members of F:AT also?

I would agree that using the designer as sole criteria for buying a game is foolish.

You are probably right when all is said and done though - the game is the ultimately the celebrity.

Yes. Even our friend Derk, misguided as he is on most issues, predicted this would happen. That some prominent members of F:AT, by breaking off from the hive would themselves become exactly what they were rebeling against in the first place on TOS. Elitists.

Steve, I'd explain to you why this isn't true, but I don't think you'd understand. Plebian.

You can't have it both ways Steve.
If Kevin Wilson and Cory Kenwhateverzia are the song writers, the clearly I'm elvis and Uba is Nancy Sinatra. Which is what you were asking for in your OP.
Now you are saying that makes us elitists.
If Barnes is Lenon then clearly you are evolving into Mark Chapman.

No. You Skeletor, Uba and Ken have remained true to what you are , simply gamers.

Unfortunately Barnes and Matt have turned elitists. Once Barnes was offered the paying gig at gameshark, Im afraid it went to his head. He was thinking, man, I am now legit, I better start acting that way. Go look at the posts that made Barnes a legend on TOS and compare them to his current stuff, not quite as edgy I would say.

Matt unfortunately can't help that he is elitist, he is British! Tea anyone?

True, it is Sinatra's world and we are just living in it!

But back to Barnes and Matt. Since they are both writing for other websites, they almost have to talk about silly gaming theories and "lofty" design because just talking about games will eventually get old and they will run out of material.

But the days of barnes blasting the "Beard and Belly" gamer looks to have vanished
