Huh. Bojack liked a movie about trolls.

I do want to see that, but I'm in and out of town constantly the next few weeks. Might have to catch that on DVD later.

I've seen Valerian twice now and enjoyed it both times. Yes, the two leads have no chemistry and bad dialogue. Every other thing about the movie is good to great though. All the aliens were interesting and/or fun. Big Market was a cool concept. Lots of good ideas and visuals in general. This will be as well regarded as The Fifth Element a decade from now when people pull the internet sticks out of their asses.

Mad Dog came back from the dead to tell us that, that should mean something.

Just got back from War for the Planet of the Apes. It sounds like movie reviewers have accidentally mixed up their scores for this movie with something else, possibly Valerian from the sounds of you guys.

I don't know how I'm going to write this review. I'm so confused and empty

I saw Dunkirk... and I have to say I found it rather boring. Very little happens, and there is barely any dialog. Cillian Murphy and the owner of the boat he is on are almost the only ones with any significant lines, and even that doesn't amount to much.

Visually, it's great. But I expected more out of a Christopher Nolan joint.

Everyone, you'll be proud of me. This weekend Emily asked me to take her to see The Emoji Movie. She's six years old and spent the weekend quoting some trailer she saw. Something about somebody throwing up another person and then eating them again.

I introduced her to my Xbox and daddy's tv for the first time and she started playing Roblox. 90 minutes after when the movie would have started in the theatre, she asks, "did we miss emoji movie" . Daddy said yes, honey.

I believe this should get me a nomination for father of the year

I really thought we were going to go this morning too. She saw Despicable Me 3 without me so there was nothing for us to see together other than Emoji. I really hope more kid movies are coming out. We're in Maine soon and I'll have less distractions...

Just distract her with a park -- only kids movies on the horizon are Blazing Samurai and Nut Job 2 (unless you take her to see IT, but it will probably freak you out when she tells you "we all float down here")

My gf refuses to see IT with me too. I can't go see that alone. I've become a real scardey cat in my mid age, unable to handle fear. The Annabelle 2 trailer comes on during a commercial and I panic-fire the remote , trying to change the channel

Brief thoughts on stuff I've seen recently.

Spiderman Homecoming - This was a big load of "MEH". The first half of the film was mind numbingly boring. A pretty big miss from Marvel. Tom Holland was fine as Peter Parker and Michael Keaton was arguably the best/most interesting thing in the film. Sadly, a compelling villain couldn't make up for the fact that this is just another Marvel film that manages to hit the right notes without making any real sort of lasting impact. It has a few great moments that exhibit some honest to goodness heart and emotion...classic Spiderman stuff. I didn't find it enough to make me care.

Baby Driver - One of my most anticipated films of the year. Lived up to my inner hype AND more. Excellent editing, the plot had enough twists and turns to keep it interesting and it was just genuinely a fun ride from start to finish. I'd argue that this is a film for movie buffs rather than your average Joe movie goer. The craftsmanship of the entire film was so enjoyable to consume with my eyes and ears...just a treat. Those looking for a crazy compelling love story or gritty car porn movie were probably let down.

Valerian - Probably my most anticipated film of the entire year. I'm glad I saw this in theaters. It's a visually stunning, wild trip, and I loved it. Is it perfect? No. However, I had a joyous sensation throughout the entire runtime. Like my soul was remember what it was like to experience Star Wars for the first time. I will take a movie like Valerian with it's big crazy ideas and goofy heart on it's sleeve attitude over most "critically acclaimed" films that get shat out into the cinema. I knew this would bomb with American audiences. I'm sure 10-15 years from now it will be looked at fondly. By then we will have had 6 more Despicable Me and Minions films, but zero more Valerian Films...

Should I see Wonder Woman or Spider-Man next?

Contrary to Egg, I really liked the new Spidey, especially the first half. A lot of great energy and humor throughout, and a Peter Parker who is an awkward bullied kid and lacks everything in cool and confidence his alter-ego has. Tom Holland is incredibly charming and fitting in that role. And Keaton is, well, Keaton (i.e., amazing).

But still, WW is more unique, and also a winner. Go see that first.

Wonder Woman. It's no Logan, but it is the best dc movie I have seen. Ever.

I agree with egg Shen about valerian. I had the same sense of wonder as I did when I first peek d at my dads heavy metal magazines in 1979/80. The story made about as much sense too, which is fine because this is heavy metal/metal hurlant stuff.

but then again those were my expectations. I didn't expect something other than it to be a "star wars ripoff" that might seem dated.
This happened with John carter as well. I expected what I got and it delivered pretty adqequately. But everyone else just fucking forgets than Burroughs fiction is over a hundred years old, and an incredibly dry read much like Lovecraft can be. Which is probably why we will never see a competent Lovecraft film made either. Because if it is good enough for Lovecraft fans, everyone else watching it will wonder why there are no tits in it and why the good guy lost in the end.
They wouldn't get it, and never will.

I agree that Wonder Woman was the best DC movie so far. And Logan was the best Marvel movie so far.

Wonder Woman is better than Spider-Man, but both are good.
