Black Rose Wars

Saw an ad for it today and had never heard of it. Did a little poking around and it sounds an awful lot like Wiz-War. Has anyone tried it? Charlie? Mezike? MB? I'm not really in the market for anything else and especially not another version of Wiz-War. I'm just curious.

I never did. Someone on here recommended it to me but it never quite looked good enough for me to make the time for. I had a hard time mentally justifying making room for a game which is kinda like Wiz-War but not as good. That's of course reductive but too many games to really worry about it.

I think Michael reviewed it and panned it.

Jackwraith, any chance you've ever played Mage Wars? The version I played goes by Mage Wars Arena now, but I thought it was the best wizards dueling game that wasn't Wiz-War or MTG.

Wizards doing battle is a favorite genre of mine. Wiz-War and Frostgrave are just about all I really need, though.

No, I never got to it. There were a couple guys in one of the local stores who used to play it regularly, so I watched some of a couple games, but never got into it. I think I was a little leery of it because it looked kinda collectible, which is something I was trying to avoid and then eventually signed off of completely.

I reviewed it here...it’s over complicated and super Kickstarter-y. As you’ve sorted out, it does resemble Wiz-War but it’s way crunchier and has deckbuilding. It looks great but it’s a drag to play- long and overwrought. Pass.
