Storage for miniature-heavy games was created by Matt Thrower
Just wondering if anyone had any cunning solutions to storing the (often painted and often metal) 28mm miniatures that come with games such as Space Hulk and Dungeonquest (especially the heroes expansion). Putting them loose in the box is not an option. Using some sort of foam storage trays in a box plastic storage crate like I do with my wargaming figures seems like overkill. Anyone suggest a sensible middle ground?

I finally acquired a used copy of Star Wars Epic Duels, which includes 31 painted miniatures, so I've been pondering this same question. I'm thinking of buying a sheet of foam, trimming it down to fit the box space, and then cutting custom inserts for each mini. For ease in use, I might also write the names of the characters above each space with a sharpie.

At home, I keep all my minis in a glass-door display cabinet -- I painted them to be seen, after all. You can find decent ones for as little as $100.
For portability, I put Litko Aerosystems flexible magnetic strips on the bottom and stick them in a metal toolchest.

I'd recommend the foam egg crate stuff for acoustic insulation and/or mattress covers. What you can do is cut two pieces the size of the box, lay one on the bottom, then put the minis in, then the piece on top. Cutting the size of the box should keep the two pices pretty well sandwiched and keep the minis from shifting around. Now I'll admit that I haven't done this myself, but this is the idea I thought of from your description.

I just use alternating layers of bubble wrap and minis, to the point that it's deep enough that, when you put the lid on the box they are in, they are held snuggly. This holds them well enough, since goal is simply to keep them from sliding around, banging into each other and chipping the paint when you move the boxes around, or occassionally transport it.
ETA: Egg crate foam sounds like a good idea too.

Seeing that I have enough armies to kill a yak (40k, VOID, etc.) I took the plunge and bought a fishing tackle box.
That's right, a tackle box. The one I bought with plastic, partition removable, trays can easily fit my 2000+ pt Pimp Guard army. The only extra thing I did was line the trays with foam padding. WHAMMO! Instant carry case.

Fishing tackle boxes are the way to go and are much cheaper than similar items produced specifically for the miniatures industry. You can get a case nicer than a comparable size GW case for a lot less money.
If you were in the USA, I would suggest you try walmart, dick's sporting goods, or Cabela's but I don't know where they sell fishing equipment in England. Plano is the most popular brand in the USA, but there are several other good ones.
If you look hard enough, you can find fishing tackle boxes with a beer coozy built into the top of the lid. THis is great as gamers are maybe the only hobby in the world that drink as much beer as fishermen!
