Car Wars Online

An acquaintance on another message board recently pointed this game out to me. It's not super-polished, but it's incredibly detailed and tries to do everything that Car Wars did, but in 1/100th the time (thank you Mr. Computer). Thought some of you might want to check it out.

Any of you who've played, say, Interstate '76, but longed for a turn-based version so you could fret over the nitty-gritty details of vehicular combat may enjoy this. The start-stop of the turns takes a little getting used to, but once you get into the flow of things it's really fun. You can take test drives for free to get the hang of things; a 3 month subscription costs $20.

One of the coolest things is that you can record and play back complete races, so the teenager in me who always wanted to shoot a stop-motion film of a Car Wars is pleased. There's also an extensive library of recorded races to view, some of which are hilarious.

I did sign up and sub for 3 months last night, but all I've done so far is run a couple of test races and tinker with managing my gang members. Once I have a big chunk of free time I'm going to give it more of my attention.

Despite the Mac icon on the left it doesn't seem Mac-friendly.

That's really too bad.

This game is really a lot of fun once you get into it. The physics, damage modeling, and turn-by-turn gameplay are all awesome. I've placed and won prize money in one regular race and one death race so far, and had a spectacular flaming burnout feet from the finish line in one other death race. If you love Car Wars and have patience for odd indie interfaces, you've really got to give this a try.

I found that if you clicked on something in the list on the right, the infinite pictures stop. Normal site behavior returns after that.
