It is Official: I am now Irrelevant!

Yes my friends, it is official. I have been declared irrelevant in the gaming world by Derk and Octavian.

I am not bitter about it, I have to accept this judgement from these two Game Titans. Afterall, they have spoken. So for me, its time to pick myself up and dust myself off and begin again on the long road of study and once again plug in to the gaming scene that is so rich and vibrant and that I cherish so deeply.

As I begin my long road to relevance, I want to study the true masters. The true relevant individuals in boardgaming. As I began to put a list together of the most relevant members in boardgaming, I found that it was a very difficult task indeed.

Who are the most relevant people in boardgaming?

Can someone provide me a list so I can seek out their guidance and wisdom?

Oh Steve, come on. You've been irrelevant to me for quite some time now!

Using the typical boardgame analogy, porn is one of the best forms of entertainment. You can buy a lot of porn for the price of a dinner, two movie tickets, popcorn, sodas, gas/parking, and the babysitter. And you can use the porn over and over again. That's good value for your dollar.

Can you pin down the exact moment? Perhaps when I lost my BGG membership? Is BGG membership the key to relevance?

No Steve, it has nothing to do with TOS. You told me to I shouldn't care, so I stopped caring...

If you'd like me to start caring again, I can, but if I DID care, I'd advise you that you shouldn't care, and that gets us back to square one, and I'm really not even sure where square one is, or what it is. So there ya go.

Seriously. I mean, is this really news?

Anyways, Steve, when I said you weren't relevant I wasn't speaking for the universe. Only for myself. Now I know that interpretation doesn't work quite so well for your self-promotion motives, but there you go.

And the moment you lost that relevance is when you refused to meet my NFL Pick'em challenge. Maybe you'll grow some man parts next season and take your beating like the rest of the plebes here did.

For Southernman's sake Steve, what is your problem? You are always talking about people. Barnes this, Derk that, Vasel here, Thornquist there.

If it were about people. The most relevant people are: Teuber, Koniecky, Di Meglio, Wallace, Wilson, Berg, Borg, Bowden, Barker, Dunnigan to name just a few. And Jim Wallman. The designers.

And possibly some influential people in games publishing: eg Petersen and the people that led SPI, Avalon Hill, Hans im Gluck, GMT. Those are the creative minds that give us what is really important here: THE GAMES.

All of us are irrelevant, as individuals, even at the level of an irrelevant passtime. Barnes has a way with writing and hundreds (including on TOS) will acknowledge some debth to him, as will several hundreds more to Vasel. But the critics are hardly relevant. I started playing games 25 years ago and didn't need a critic to enjoy them. Barnes wrote a negative review of Android and dozens here still bought, played and enjoyed it.

MOst people don't care who writes the reviews, they listen to friends or buy what appeals to them in theme or art work. Some FLGSs are influential in their area. All irrelevant in the still small picture of board gaming.

If it makes you feel better: you are relevant to me. I enjoyed your podcasts, some of your posts here and on TOS annoy me. I don't think I've ever bought a game on your recommendation, though.

I did buy The Road based on Matt's review.

But what is relevant? What will remain decades beyond our pitifully irrelevant lives? Monopoly, Settlers, Scrabble...

I realize self-promotion goes against the very core of your socialist ideals of how everyone should be a good BORG and know their place within the hive but by God you have done more self promoting on that damn football challenge than any self-promoting I have ever done!~ HA!

I don't like your tone Jur. Just for that your adoption certificate to the Heartland has been denied!

Fuck the tone Steve. If you don't like the tone, go the TOS, where people will tell you nicely before sticking a knife in your back. I'm just telling you what I think, to your face and with the best of intentions. I thought that straight talking attitude was appreciated in the heartland.

Now don't you agree with what I said, that the designers and games are more important than any of us here?

For God Sakes Jur, take the weed out of your Amsterdam Coffee and get your head straight man.

No, the designers are not more important. To be honest the designers are some of the most boring people on the planet. Slide Rule junkies who sometimes get lucky by having the right elements in place to make a somewhat entertaining game. Most of them have no clue about entertainment, which is what games are, pure entertainment NOT math puzzles which most of them turn out to be.

The games are secondary as well because those of us love games are sometimes forced to play an imperfect product simply because there is no other choice. When that happens the charismatic gamer and the people in his group must breath life into the game and make the playing worthwhile!

I think the fact that I'm not even sure you even "play" games makes you somewhat irrelevant in my book.
