I watched Appaloosa last night. I remember hearing some good things about it when it was about to come to theatres, and then kind of forgot all about it. Well, my wife brought it home from Blockbuster, and I'm really glad she did. If you like westerns take a look at it. Lots of gritty action, interesting characters, and funny dialogue.

Is this the one with Ed Harris and the U boat skipper from Lord of the Rings?

There was a U-boat in Lord of the Rings? Man, I hate it when movies change the book's story.

Nah for some reason Viggo Mortensen reminds me of a U-boat skipper in that movie with teh scraggly beard and all.

Am I the only person who can't stand Viggo?

I'm not a big fan but I did enjoy A History of Violence. He was sufficiently badass in that movie.

Yes it's the one with Ed Harris and Viggo. Both of them are sufficiently badass in the film. No hobbits make an apperance, although you do get hoars, a nympho, and frontier judge.

That's what I thought. I went to see it at the theater and thought it was pretty good. I liked both characters in the movie.

Viggo was a pretty bad ass russian in "Eastern Promises" too. What's with all the Viggo hate? He's showing some flexibility and willingness to take interesting and diverse roles. I haven't seen him in a stinker yet. "Hidalgo" was even enjoyable in it's own emotionally-manipulative pseudo-uplifting way.

Yeah, I like Viggo, although I disliked A History of Violence, due to the fact that the comic was a thousand times better and if they had followed the story it would have been a great film, instead of a sub-par movie.

Both Eastern Promises and Apaloosa are very slow-moving, ponderous, but quality movies.
SPOILER: The ending saved Apaloosa for me, because Viggo Mortensen couldn't have looked like more of a cowboy in that final duel if he'd been born in 1865. Ed Harris was suitably gritty, but Rene Zellwigger was aweful, and his relationship with her didn't make much sense. The scenes were put together a bit shakily, and didn't quite flow smoothely enough for my tastes. It also could have used some judicious editing on a few of the slower-moving scenes.
