A question about ads

In light of the sad meeple thing over on BGG (just an plea that shows up for people that have ad-block on to turn it off), I got curious about how ad revenue is generated. Here on F:AT, is ad revenue generated by ad views, or ad clicks? I currently have ad-block turned on for every website, and I never make exceptions for specific sites because I always assumed that since I would never click an ad, it wouldn't make any difference if I had it turned on or off. According to Octavian, this isn't exactly correct (at least not universally).

So, will turning off my adblock for F:AT help out even though I will most likely never click on an ad?

I have no idea for Fat, but from a blog an indie video game developer wrote, my understanding is that generally the advertiser pays a blanket fee, but. In the HTML code or tracking or some crap i dont full understand they can see where people arriving at their web page have come from, and thus work out how many viewers per month are coming from a particular advert. Thus they can calculate the net worth of that advert in terms of arrivals at their webpage.

Google ads are pay per click.

The banner ads at the top are a flat fee per month. The advertisers receive a report of how many impressions the ad makes and how many click throughs their banner gets. If you have ad block there would be zero impressions for you. That may or may not influence an advertiser to renew with us.

I don't use AdBlock but NoScript. Since the banner ads are part of the F:AT script, I do see them.

Are impressions how many times the ad is loaded/viewed by me?

Okay, so basically it's just a matter of the companies deciding if their ad is "performing" well enough to justify further ad space purchases. I guess it wouldn't hurt to exempt F:AT from my filter.

I use an adblock because, frankly, internet advertisments are beyond moronic and hurt my brain. And I'm not exactly the kind to buy something because I see an advertisment, pretty much the opposite.

Impressions matter, so you should allow ads served by fortressat.com to be a good netizen.

I also recommend banner blindness . It's awesome.

AKA Please turn your free ad blocking off and then pay us $25 per annum to not send you the ads.

I've been consciously ignoring all adverts since I was a teen.

Yeah, I doubt I will turn off Adblock for BGG, especially since their ads scroll with you, which is complete bullshit.

I have such an aversion to clicking on ads that of the 1% of the time where I see an ad banner that is relevant to my interests, I will google search it and find it that way rather than click the ad.

Affiliate programs like Amazon or Miniature Market here where the site would actually get a cut of my purchase is a different story though.

It's possible that just by serving the ad to you they'll be able to attribute the sale to the banner via cookies so while the site might not get the click through revenue, the ad, as far as the advertisers are concerned, worked.

Don't kid yourselves my children. You may think you ignore advertising but perhaps only in a background subconscious level they affect you.

Really? So how does "in a background subconscious level they affect you" work when you don't see the ads?

I think it means, that even if you don't SEE the ads, the ads mean you have tiny dick.
