Was I out of line?

When I first read your post trashing Dune, I did get the faint whiff of a troll given the well known affection Barnes has for the game, but I actually took it as a rather humourous troll amongst "friends". I certainly don't think you were out of line or derailing the thread. If I see a game I don't like enter the Trashdome, I'm gonna trash it. Southernman just enjoys needling you I think.

Really does anyone take a censure by a Kiwi seriously? "Kiwi manners" are like "English haute cuisine." Sure, technically, such a thing exists, but by the standards of most of the developed world, it's not something to be taken seriously...

See...had it come from anyone else I would have immediately taken it as a joke. Southernman and I have...let's call it history. We have history. So I wasn't sure.

Obviously I had a little Euro-flare up of sensitivity. Probably too many foofy espresso drinks.

I'm with Barnes that Dune is the greatest designed game ever. I'm not always in a mood to play it, but always thoroughly enjoy every game. I'm still stunned at how concise the rules are, but still get all of the major plot points in.

It is also perhaps one of an extremely tiny set of games where the mechanics of combat are so slim as to put the emphasis of the game squarely on the intrigue parts.

Once you decide to betray someone, you don't want to spend the next three hours slowly grinding out the betrayal results. The decision and resolution should be quick. Dune gets that. Damned few other games do.
