I also recently noticed that Starstruck, my favorite sci-fi comic, is being "remastered" and put back into print. Think Thomas Pynchon meets L. Frank Baum in space. Any other Starstruck fans here? Has anyone here checked out the new editions?

IDW put the series out in single issue form starting last year. They do a hell of a job with their re-mastering. I was blown away with their Rocketeer collection, and Starstruck looks just as good, maybe better. I've never read Starstruck, but I've got the hardcover being held for me when it comes out.

For those considering the new Astonishing X-Men the Whedon run was excellent but Ghost Box (by Ellis who I usually enjoy) feels flat. I get the softback compilations. Very interesting artwork -- worth thumbing through a copy in the store. Richer and deeper drawings and colors.

Since the movie is coming out next May, I decided to start reading Priest. Or should I say manhwa or a Korean Comic. I read the first volume where it looks like somewhere in the post revelation dystopian world has reverted to some kind of old west revival where the landscape is run by the the 12 fallen angels that have lost the favor of God. The hero is a human who has been halfway possessed by the devil where he fights his urge to be evil and the side that wants to retain free will.

Where can you go wrong there?

So far it's pretty cool.

Yeah, I enjoyed the Whedon run, but dropped Astonishing two issues into the Ellis run out of boredom. And I loved his work on Planetary.

Just picked up the first nine collected issues of Y the Last Man from my local library. We'll see.

One of my favourite comics, though it spins its wheels for a while. If you like it, also check out Ex Machina. Same writer.

I was at the comic store the other week and since I had a little cash in hand (metaphorically as I don't actually carry cash around that much) and I was looking for a monthly series to pick up in addition to Buffy. Any recommendations? Here are my stipulations:

1. Needs to have recently started, not something I have to go back and buy trade collections (I have plenty of those on my 'to read list')
2. Not hyper violent for the sake of hyper violence, in other words stuff by Mark Millar
3. I prefer stuff that isn't part of Marvel or DC's mainstream universes where you have to read 40 different comics to know what is going on in the main book

Other than that, I'm pretty open to anything.

A couple of Vertigo comics: Sweet Tooth and The Unwritten. I think both started in 2009, so you would have to buy 1 or 2 trades to catch up.

I love Whedon's AXM. Dropped it as soon as he finished. Ellis is incredibly hit or miss for me.

If you haven't, you might want to check out Runaways. Started off being written by Brian K. Vaughan, and Whedon picked it up after. Great series. Can't say anything about the book post-Whedon, but both his and Vaughan's stuff is quite stellar.

Yeah I started reading the first volume of Unwritten at the book store once, looks great, that is definitely on my list.

What's Sweet Tooth? I haven't heard about that one.

I agree, and now I miss Runaways. I was really excited when Terry Moore started writing it because I'd heard good things about him, but it was just crap.

I love Ex Machina, as I mentinoed in early posts and would like to echo barefoot killer's recommendation. I like Vaughn from Ex Machina and tried to like Y but didn't enjoy it as much as i hoped I would. I got through the the third trade. Do the wheels stop spinning after that?

'Tis a massive tome. But $60 (or $38 on Amazon) well spent.

Post-apocalyptic. Children whose genetics are crossed with animals. Reminds me a bit of The Road, as well as The Walking Dead. Here's the cover for issue #1 -- gives you an idea of the art style.
