That's a serious question; I've never played Vinci. I'm asking if DoW is just slapping a new coat of paint on a 10-year-old title? (second question: if I become interested, should I just get Vinci instead?)

I suspect they'll shorten the game by reducing the number of points required for victory. The map will undoubtedly be different, and they'll probably make modifications to each civilization's special powers. It would be cool if the game included a boatload of plastic figures for each civ, as in HISTORY OF THE WORLD, but that's probably prohibited by cost. VINCI just came with wood disks.

I haven't tried it, but this looks like it might be a good alternative to either VINCI or SMALLWORLD, and it's currently available at clearance prices, if you look around:

Actually, the first thing I thought was "Gee, this looks like AGE OF GODS".

But VINCI? Come on, the game isn't even very good. It's DEFINITELY not as thematic as all these zany characters would lead you to believe. Actually, what little theme there is is WAY more appropriate as a historical civilization game than a fantasy game. Shows how much these guys know about theme. Smells like an AT cash in to me!

Anyway, they can keep it. I sold VINCI off a long time ago hoping that I'd never play it again.

VINCI is not a bad game, but I really don't see what a retheme is going to do with it, or how a fantasy theme fits at all.
Didn't you get 2 powers per civ in the existing version? Since I'm guessing the powers in the retheme are fantasy races, does that mean only one power for each new civ? That slaughters the variety on the board and would make the game tons more repetative.

Also as barnes said, the game always seemed to be about civilisations rising and falling throughout the ages. Doesn't fit this retheme at all - the giants die off to be replaced by the halflings? What? And what the hell is a zombie nation?
