Being a co-op is NOT a bad thing. Single player + 3 AIs isn't as much fun as four player because you can plan more and engage in trash talk. I'm not a computer gamer and I only became interested because a friend up the road was showing l4d off. Buy it Frank, you won't regret it. And you'll find four players easily, in this thread alone.

Fucking brilliant. Best cRPG storytelling of all time. Too bad the combat is inferior.

Temple of Elemental Evil is great if you download the patches and a couple of the mods. It's the best adventure written for 1st edition AD&D, translated into AD&D 3.5 rules, then made into a very tactical turn-based PC rpg. Some of the fights have been very tense, coming down to my whole party unconscious and slowly bleeding to death while one brave hero desperately fights the last couple of monsters. And with my tactics, that often means one sickly mage slashing away with a +1 dagger after he runs out of spells.

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines is a great RPG with FPS combat, though again, download the patches. It really captures the feel of the World of Darkness, dark, gritty, edgy, mature, and yet darkly humorous. Break into the hospital to steal blood, or just pay a hooker to meet you in a dark alley. Get clues in the porno shop, buy guns and ammo at the pawn shop, get shot down by chicks at nightclubs in every section of town unless you bought up your social skills. Kill other vampires into fiery dust clouds, and destroy all kinds of other creatures of the night that get in your way, especially zombies. For the first 2/3 of the game, there are often alternate methods to get things done: sneak, socialize or kill. In the late game, it's just some sneaking and lots of killing. Best of all is the soundtrack, with some great gothic/industrial music by the likes of Ministry, Daniel Ash and Lacuna Coil.

I actually was about to recommend both of those games Shellhead, with the exact same caveats about downloading the patches.

I always wonder what could have been it Temple hadn't been so buggy. Instead of awesome turn based true to the RPG ruleset combat we get the Neverwinter Nights franchise. They aren't terrible games, but they just don't FEEL like D&D to me. Also, not being able to create a whole party is bullshit.

The haunted hotel in Vampire: Bloodlines is a video game masterpiece. I have played through it 10+ times and it still freaks me out.

I'm sorry to hear that about Neverwinter Nights. I avoided it because it didn't look enough like D&D for my purposes, but a friend loaned it to me months ago and I still haven't tried it yet.

Yeah, there are some great sections in Bloodlines, and that haunted hotel still spooks me a little. The first time I played through that, it was late at night and I was playing in the dark with the headphones on. You know that creepy somebody-is-watching-me feeling you can get in real life, that prickly sensation in the back of the neck? I got that while exploring the first floor, so I turned my character around, just in time to see a ghost fading away in the distance. Very creepy, and scarier stuff happened later.

Yeah, it isn't too shabby. I just never really got into the real time/micro-management of the rest of the characters. I'm just too much of a turn based junkie I think.

I just picked up the PC and Dawn of War anthology. The complete collection was there, but that was $99 as opposed to $54. I couldn't justify that the last expansion was worth a $45 price increase.

versus (8 player. 4 human players vs 4 zombie players (they play the 'boss' zombies) and tonnes of AI zombie. i haven't tried this as i only know enough people for co-op)

As I've already mentioned I played the game with my friends in LAN. Although we played the campaign mode with just 4 players, too, I think versus is actually more fun, given you're playing locally and can taunt the other players. What makes versus better is that the zombies can set up proper ambushes.

For example I reckon you all know in the hospital stage when after you took the elevator to the top, you climb up on the roof and then jump down on helipad. Well, the four players jumped down in pairs, only that after the first two jumped down I and a zombie friend both spawned as hunters and attacked the other two. The catch is that once you jumped down there's no way to attack zombies on the roof. This was very funny. One of the guys being attacked even screamed in agony "Throw a pipe bomb up the roof!" but it was already too late then }:D.

My favorite zombie is the smoker - you can hide on a roof behind a chimney and then pull up and choke one of the heroes. A human controlled tank is even more devastating.

Yeah, the last expansion wasn't that hot. It introduced Dark Eldar and Sister's of Battle and flying units. From what I hear, the fliers kind of fucked up some of the game balance. Dark Crusade is the shit though, Tau, Necron, and campaign mode.
