Magic Realm is a very, very special game. It is the Mount Everest of adventure games. It’s amazing and impenetrable, but I’m afraid its time has come and gone. I played it for a while around 2006-2007 and I just loved it. I had a binder for the rules and even played face to face a few times with experienced players. But at the time I had a library job where I was in a back room office all day practically unmonitored. So I would post stuff to BGG that got me banned and play Realmspeak all day.

Gloomhaven is a modern Magic Realm. There is a lot about that that makes me think of it.

If you really want to learn Magic Realm, go out to your drive way, or garage as the case may be, take a deep breath and then slam your dick in the car door three or four times. Same level of pain in a much much shorter time frame.

I'm no dope when it comes to learning games, I learned Fields of Fire and ASL after all, but I tried for a long long time to learn this game and failed. It may be a great game but the effort and time it would take to progress past what I call "playing the rules",where you are struggling to just play correctly, to actually playing the game, where the rules take a back seat to strategy and narrative, would be enormous.

In the modern era with soooooooooooooo many adventure games out there that can deliver a story and fun far more efficiently, Magic Realm's day has come and gone.

That is exactly the tragedy of Magic Realm. It’s simply obsolete now, and it’s brillance is in the past. It’s from a time when designers like Hamblen we’re trying to work out how to do stuff like an epic heroic fantasy game in the confines of board game rules and also coming out of a time when the hobby was very much focused on simulation. I think it’s a game of great historical importance and of tremendous influence...but I think it is a game better appreciated than played these days. There is virtually zero reason to actually PLAY it when Stuff like Gloomhaven and Dungeon Degenerates are out there.

So can someone tell me where I can buy this Gloomhaven?

Any of you want to divest? I really don't want to go to BGG

I saw it in a FLGS in Columbus, Ohio called the Guard Tower. If that helps. :)

Remember when there were Magic Realm reprint rumors a few years back when MoV was announced? I had it on good authority that SOMEONE was doing it. Seems to have fizzled out.

Watch, next week they’ll announce a reprint at GenCon.

Your cheapest option is probaby at GameNerdz,

www.gamenerdz.com/gloomhaven-ding-dent

$110 for a ding and dent copy, I ordered a copy and the box top had very minor bowing in some of the corners. It was barely noticeable, ymmv.

What hotseatgames said - The Guardtower in Columbus has a copy, or had a copy as of two weeks or so ago. There's another one in Columbus (well, Dublin OH) called Beyond the Board that had one a few weeks ago as well.

I haven't been to the Dublin store, I'll have to check that out.

Last night 2 of my game group came over and we started a new campaign of SEAL Team Flix. We had a great time! Traditionally, they are not huge fans of luck, so they preferred flicking as an outcome decider over dice rolling. One of them surprisingly turned out to be pretty good at the sniper side board. A six digit e-Lock door gave him fits though.

As for my own performance, well... we almost had the mastermind escorted off the map in mission 2B - Jade Sparrow, and I accidentally bounced a shot off a wall and blasted her. Oops.

In the next mission, Haven Fire, I "discovered" a hostage with another errant round.

INIS: Just as good as I hoped. 4 new players, my youngest came out of the gate fast. Later rounds were denying him victory conditions until I snuck in with 6 troops in 6 areas and he managed to secure victory by dominating 6 enemy troops and being present in areas with six sanctuaries.
