Villager RULES. So satisfying to chop that tree down on somebody.

My main is undoubtedly Zero Suit Samus but I also frequent Captain Falcon ("FALCON PAUNCH!") and Meta Knight. And lately Lucario has been a favorite. I've also been using Wario more. I actually really like Ness too. And Star Fox.

Jigglypuff and Olimar...I don't even...never mind. I can't use them at all. Little Mac, I just send him off the damn platform all the time.

One of the best things about that game is you can play it at whatever level you want. You can just bash around, like I do with the kids, doing things like our beloved "all Mega Man" battles. Or there is a STUPENDOUSLY deep game there if you want there to be.

Villager is undoubtedly my favorite of the new-this-time ones. The best thing about him is that as long as that tree is up on the stage you can swing that axe wherever you want. It's a pretty powerful move, and yes, it's wonderful to cut down the tree on top of someone. Wario is a hoot when there are items, because you can just be the guy going around and eating them all, and then you can fart on everyone.

I think my "main" is probably Bowser or King Dedede, though I'd like to get around to getting pretty good with a couple lighter characters, maybe Yoshi or Pac-Man. But I have a hard time committing myself to just one guy on a regular basis. Because I'm naturally a goofy smasher, I like getting to use all of the characters now and then, so it's hard to say I have a definite main. There are a few of them that seem to always elude me too, partly because they have some weird mini-game-like element to use them effectively. Olimar is one of those. I can't imagine going to the trouble to figure out which Pikmin you are throwing at which time. Rosalina is another, because I really don't completely understand how she interacts with Luma exactly.

Don't get me started on all of those Fire Emblem characters. The only one I have any attachment to is Marth, just because he was in Melee.

I actually picked up a couple of Amiibos last night, Luigi for myself and Pikachu for my son's birthday next week. Luigi has gotten to level 30 really fast, and he's pretty darn good. I could probably get pretty decent if I just sparred with him consistently.

I'm actually planning on investing in some of those Hori battle pads, since that's a cheaper way to get a GC controller without investing in the adapter. I'm also trying to unlearn jumping by tapping up on the stick, and retraining myself to jump with X/Y. That's like learning how to ride a bike all over again.

*edit* I'll add you Josh. I might start another thread to do some meetup action for playing online. The big red flag with the online Wii U games are that you need to do so much background chitchat to meet up.

The tree is nice, but want to pause the game and run around the fucking room when I drop a bowling ball on someone trying to get back up on the ledge. Holy SHIT that is satisfying. It's like crouch-to-rest with Jigglypuff. I love it.

I like the Fire Emblem characters, the only problem is that they are kind of same-y. And really, Shulk looks/feels like one of the FE gang so that was sort of an odd choice. That said, I like Lucina the best out of them all.

My "do not like" characters would be Sonic, Yoshi and Mario (yeesh). Just do not like playing with them, regardless of liking them in plenty of other games. Mario is just TERRIBLE. That fucking cape move, ugh. At least Luigi has that goofy planking torpedo thing..

Pac-Man is FUN but bad. I love his move set. But at higher levels of play he doesn't seem to be competitive at all.

I'm REALLY trying to not get into the Amiibo thing, which is SUPER hard being in the throes of a bout of Nintendomania right now and having the new 3DSxl that can use them. And REALLY wanting to have Star Fox figures.

Controllers, River uses the gamepad and I've got Scarlett on a regular wiimote (no nunchuk)- it's easier for her to grasp. I use the Pro Controller, which BTW has the longest damn battery life of any rechargeable device I've ever owned. I've charged it like ONCE since I bought it before Christmas.

Cracked75 is me. I don't know where the LCD went but I can't correct it. Doh.

Last night before bed I went on my first "big" Monster Hunter 4 mission, where you fight the Great Jaggi. I neglected to paintball him, so I kept having to hunt for him since he runs away like a bitch... but the real tragedy is that after successfully completing the subquest of killing X Jaggia, I accidentally bumped the power button somehow and put the 3DS into sleep mode. Goodbye, mission progress!

Got Hotline Miami 2 today. If you loved the first, you will love this one. You play as many different characters now. Believe it or not but this one is gorier than the first game.

The story is all over the place and I don't expect it to make sense any time soon.

Music is fantastic, as expected. If you are a fan, don't hesitate.

A few weeks ago I realized I was kind of burned out on the Xbox and instead returned to my laptop for the Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition I bought ages ago. BG1 isn't bad, though BG2 is really where it's at. I had a good time replaying it. It was my third playthrough and I realized that I probably played the exact same way every time, with the same party (Me as a fighter, Imoen, Minsk, Dynahier, Khalid, and Jahiera). Those are pretty much the first people you meet and I stuck with them. (It doesn't help that the first folks you meat come in teams and ditching one means losing another.) I finished it the other night and am moving on to other things, but I already kind of want to hit it again with the express purpose of checking out other companions and following their quests.

Having been reminded that my computer can play games (at least older ones), I hit up GOG and grabbed Baldur's Gate 2 (this was easier than finding the disks I already own) and Starflight I and II, for giggles. My GOG library reminded me that I have the entire Ultima series and Legend of Grimrock, again purchased probably during the Bush administration and forgotten about. I started it last night. Eye of the Beholder 2 is a favorite of mine, so so far I'm really enjoying this (though I can see the magic system bugging me before too long). My party is the Jesus and Mary Chain Gang, an all-female bunch named after women of questionable reputation in JAMC songs: Candy, the minotaur fighter; Cindy, the human fighter; Cherry, the insectoid rogue; and Honey, the lizard mage.

Speaking of computer games, and I promise this all wasn't just a lead-in to bloglinking, I started a new Sunday series on my blog called I Played That! , talking about computer (not console or arcade) games I played on my Commodore 64 and IBM computers from about 1983 until I got my first console (a PS1) in the mid-late 90s. On Sunday I'll be talking more about Baldur's Gate. This is part of what renewed my interest here.

Dungeon Hack is where it's at, Dave. I love the EotB series, but Dungeon Hack is the Roguelike of the series. Love it. Still have the original "Silver Box" collection.

With regard to "computer voices and shit music" (from your blog about M:I) if you've never played Tongue of the Fatman, you have to. It's dreadful and hilarious. I think you can play it on that new emulator that Wayback Machine came out with (I think that's what it was) but in any event, it's worth playing repeatedly for the music, voices, and the absurd Mortal Combat dropouts.

Rayman Legends was this month's free Xbox Games with Gold game for Xbox One. I can't wait to finally play it. I hear it's amazing. 4-way local multiplayer too, so old-school

I've been playing entirely too much Dungeon of the Endless over the last couple of weeks. It is a wonderful mix of tower defense, simple RPG, procedurally generated dungeons (the curmudgeon in me refuses to call the game a rogue-like just because it has this ONE Rogue-like feature--Rogue and Hack were special for many more reasons than having procedurally generated dungeons), and perhaps just a bit of single-player MOBA. It's quite difficult and charming, and it has a habit of revealing its virtues at a deliberate, extremely satisfying pace.

By the way, is anybody else of the opinion that Steam users should stop tagging games with "indie," "pixel graphics," and "rogue-like?" Those tags are practically useless at this point. I mean, I'm shocked when I run across a new game that isn't an indie rogue-like with 16-bit graphics.

I remember playing 4-p Goldeneye on my parents' 35'' tube tv back in the day. Your part of the screen was so tiny...

I could adapt so easily to a quarter of a screen and was so much better at watching my friend's quarters and abusing that intelligence. So much fun :)
